The 30th Memorial Championship kicked off the Disc Golf Pro Tour (DGPT) this year down in sunny Phoenix. Spread between two courses, Fountain Hills and Vista Del Camino the tournament features two rounds at each course. I enjoyed getting out there to spectate, photograph and meet new friends. Shouts to Alex Berg who let me caddy for him (aka carry his bag of discs) during round three, it was a great experience during a sunny filled day at Fountain Hills. Of the two courses I think anyone would favor Fountain Hills for its green grass and ginormous reclaimed water (read: sewage) spraying fountain in the middle of the lake.
Being at disc golf tournaments is extremely comfortable and enjoyable for me but not so much for Whitney. So we also made it out to a few places, mainly In-N-Out Burger, during the evenings before shacking up for the night in a Bass Pro parking lot. The first night I was so tired pulling into Phoenix that when I rolled up to the Bass Pro I was apparently in the wrong lot. Sooo I had my first knock which went so much smoother than everyone on Reddit makes it seem. “Hey wrong lot buddy” “Okay sir I’m sorry I saw Bass Pro was a free lot sir” “Yeah its over there, not right here” Done. Don’t let those redditors scare you away from vandwelling. Freecampsites.net is a great resource and has come in handy multiple times and it is still early in the road trip. Thanks to the people who submit reviews and post up places so you don’t have to stealth camp every night.
I can’t wait to get out to photograph more disc golf tournaments this year especially the DGPT events and DeLa in May. I am consistently learning something new about my techniques and composition. This tournament I was using only manual focus lenses to try to focus more on the framing but I hope to get a quick autofocus lens before the next big stretch of tourneys.
