The North Shore of Oahu ended up being the only thing on all the islands we visited that I was actually expecting. I’ve heard so many good things about the relaxed vibes and big waves on the windward side of Oahu for a while and have finally confirmed that for myself. They have a proper hostel with loads of kitchen area, foreign backpackers to socialize with, and waves and beaches you dream about seeing.
The surf out here is the best I’ve seen. Although Costa Rica has some big waves this place has diversity of break types and consistent waves day in and day out. We weren’t able to make it onto any waves since they were well out of our league and my bum foot couldn’t handle the pressure but it sure is fun to watch some people send it.
Money is always a huge consideration for me but especially when I’m travelling. Here things are as cheap as they get in Hawaii: $30 a night for the hostel, $12 for a twelver of modelo, and $5.50 for an all-day bus pass. These three things mixed with a dab of sunscreen and a bag of chips is all that is required to enjoy yourself thoroughly.
The Bus is THE way to get around this island. For $5.50 you can get on and off as many times as you wish in one day. You can get on The Bus at the airport and ride it for 2+ hours all the way up the coast for a gorgeous roadtrip, but do bear in mind that the roads here are bumpy, very bumpy so use the restroom before embarking. The only other options are expensive rental cars or a $100 uber ride (only 35 miles or so) to get up north. I will take the $5.5 version all day. Once up north Whitney and I used the bus to get up and down the Kamehameha Highway during the day to different spots along the beach. It comes every thirty minutes so its easy to jump on and off. We found the best relaxing location around a bend where the crowd is thinned out and there is tree cover to get out of rain or sun. I’d tell you where it is but then I’d have to kill you so I’ll keep it a secret for now. Go find a secluded spot for yourself, you might never want to go home.
