Next stop on our CO/UT tour was Breckenridge. We slummed it in a hostel where I got to sleep in the third bunk and whack my head on the ceiling a few times.
We were informed that no trip is a good trip unless it includes Breck brew so we went there straight away and got tipsy off high percentage beers – only one each. Although they have a totally free bus that takes you everywhere we were impatient enough and fast enough walkers to just beat it to all our destinations. But if you are trying to take the easy route just get on the bus.
At the ski resort they run the gondola for free in the summer that takes you to right up to the lodge. Beer is flowing and they have all sorts of cool activities. Zip lines, rock wall, bobsled on wheels, kart on rails, panning for gold, and many more. The lines for most rides were 30 deep of 6-12 year olds so we didn’t get involved. As a kid I would have enjoyed a space like this way more than an amusement park.
Another positive to renting Hercules (the F150) was it enabled us to climb to the top of Pikes Peak. At 14,000 Dee would not have made it up or down. I have watched the hill climb for this place ever since I learned about it when visiting my Aunt Terri in Colorado Springs many moons ago. We were not able to race to the top but at least we drove all the way.
When you get to the pay booth at the bottom of the mountain they decide if you get to drive all the way to the top or if you have to stop at a lower level and take the shuttle. Ranger Betty was not interested in us driving to the top so she gave us one of the shuttle lots. I wasn’t interested in waiting around, we are impatient remember? When we got to that lot I persuaded (read: asked nicely with a smile) the attendant to let us drive the last few miles to the top. I’m not sure why but it wouldn’t have been the same to not actually drive myself all the way to the top, I didn’t want to ride that shuttle.
At the top we had their famous donuts and watched some squirrels scrounge a few from stupido tourismos. We also acted like stupido ourismos by taking a photo at the sign and blocking the important elevation number…it says 14,115 btw.
